About
I work at the intersection of engineering and trust to drive performance. For more than 30 years, I've worked inside complex systems — water utilities, councils, infrastructure projects, and regulated organisations — where the technical solution is rarely the hardest part.
What consistently determines success or failure is not capability alone, but whether trust exists where decisions are made.
When trust erodes:
- Decisions slow or stall
- Knowledge stops flowing
- Energy drains from teams
- Risk increases long before KPIs change
- Mistakes are made (sometimes leading to catastrophic outcomes)
My work focuses on making trust visible, measurable, and manageable — so organisations can improve delivery certainty, governance, and performance.
Why Trust Became The Constraint
My background is engineering, supported by academic research in business management and innovation. Over time, a consistent pattern became impossible to ignore.
Projects rarely fail because people lack expertise. They fail because knowledge becomes fragmented, decisions are delayed, and confidence erodes under pressure.
At the centre of this dynamic sits trust — not as a soft concept, but as a systemic condition that directly influences:
- Decision quality
- Knowledge flow
- Momentum
- Risk exposure
Recognising this led to the development of a practical system for managing trust in complex environments.
This work is not theoretical. Across decades of engineering and project delivery, I saw capable people constrained by systems that made trust fragile and knowledge invisible. Decisions were deferred, risk accumulated quietly, and good intent was often overwhelmed by complexity.
I didn't set out to write about trust. I set out to understand why delivery breaks down — and what could be done earlier to prevent it. That journey, including the research and field work behind the InnoWise® framework, is explored more fully in my book and on the Innovate Wisely site.
What I've Built
To address this challenge, I developed an integrated framework and toolset designed for real-world delivery contexts:
InnoWise® Framework
The InnoWise® framework is a continuous, lifecycle-based system that aligns trust, knowledge, and energy across the four phases of delivery: from formation through creation, adoption and critique. A checklist aids discovery of where projects are at and what is missing.
Trust Engine™
The Trust Engine™ is the conceptual core that treats trust as infrastructure: invisible when functioning, expensive when failing. Trust is the reason we get momentum.
Trust Analyser™
The Trust Analyser™ is an AI-enabled diagnostic tool that measures trust, knowledge flow, and energy as lead indicators of performance, risk, and adoption.
Knowledge Canvas™
The Knowledge Canvas™ is a structured, on-line, method for mapping the knowledge process (creation & transfer), the trust and energy cycle, assumptions, and decision logic.
InnoWise® Training Program
We offer a selection of three workshop programs to choose from to:
- Raise Trust awareness
- Gain sustained growth
- Sustain performance
Together, these form a practical system for improving delivery outcomes in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
Where This Work Is Applied
My work is most often used where complexity, risk, and accountability intersect, including:
- Water utilities and councils
- Infrastructure and capital programs
- Regulated and assurance-heavy environments
- Innovation and transformation initiatives under delivery pressure
While my sector roots are in water and infrastructure, the trust dynamics are universal — and increasingly critical as organisations face higher scrutiny, tighter resources, and faster decision cycles.
Author, Speaker, Practitioner
I am currently publishing a six-part book series: Measure & Manage Trust: A System That Drives Performance for a Better Tomorrow
Part 1 introduces the thinking behind the Trust Engine™ and InnoWise® framework. Subsequent parts explore application, governance, and scale.
I also speak regularly to executive, technical, and governance audiences on:
- Trust as a leading indicator of performance
- Knowledge governance and decision quality
- Innovation and delivery in complex systems
How To Work With Me
Most engagements start with clarity.
Trust Awareness Call
A focused conversation to understand your context, constraints, and whether a trust-based diagnostic is appropriate.
From there, organisations typically engage through:
- Trust Analyser™ diagnostics and Trust Impact Reports
- Strategy and delivery alignment workshops
- Advisory support through Innovate Wisely™
